A gym represents one of the most demanding indoor air quality environments: high occupancy, elevated breathing rates (meaning higher inhaled dose of any pollutant per person), sweat and body odor, cleaning chemical residues, and often mechanical ventilation systems that are undersized for peak occupancy.

For a 2,000 sq ft gym floor with a 12 ft ceiling, effective air purification requires a total CADR of approximately 1,600 cfm or more — typically achieved with multiple commercial-grade units working in combination.

Placement strategy matters in gyms. Units should be positioned to create cross-ventilation patterns across the exercise floor, drawing air from the perimeter and returning it cleaned through units positioned at strategic points. Ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted commercial units are preferable to floor units, which are prone to obstruction and damage in gym environments.

For gyms, activated carbon filtration is particularly important for odor control — body odor, sweat and cleaning products all contribute significant VOC loads. The carbon stage should be sized generously and replaced on a 3-month schedule in high-traffic facilities.
