Air purifiers and humidifiers are often bought as alternatives to each other, but they serve complementary functions. A purifier removes contaminants; a humidifier adds moisture. In many Indian environments — particularly during the dry winter months or in air-conditioned spaces — both are needed simultaneously.
The key concern when using both together is placement. A humidifier increases local moisture levels, which can affect HEPA filter efficiency if the two units are positioned too close together. The general guidance is to place them on opposite sides of the room so the humidified air has time to disperse before reaching the purifier's intake.
Monitoring relative humidity is essential. The target range for indoor comfort and air quality is 40–60% relative humidity. Below 40%, dry air causes irritation and increases the survival time of airborne pathogens. Above 60%, condensation risks and mold growth become concerns.
